Warren County North Carolina Deed Bk 21, P 76----Dec. 13, 1818
Sarah Sturdivant to Richard Boyed both of Warren County for $40
All her right, title, interest and life estate in 66 1/3 acres which had been layed off to her as her dower of the lands of her last (late) husband Henry Sturdivant adjoining Daniel B. Allen, Richard Boyed and Hawtree Creek.
Wit: Henry Fitts, Carter Coleman. /s/ Sarah x Sturdivant
Proved by Fitts Feb. Court 1819. Registered March 20, 1819.
|
Most Tax records from 1779-1790 show that Henry Sturdivant possessed 200 acres of land. 66 1/3 acres would have been the 1/3 dower right of Sarah in this land.
Henry Sturdivant in 1775 bought 300 acres on both sides of Hawtree Creek from Travis Rees.
In 1778 Henry Sturdivant sold 100 acres on Hawtree Creek to Randolph Sturdivant, his brother. After that time he possessed this 200 acres until his death ca 1796.
Sarah Sturdivant does not appear on the 1820 Census of Warren County but her son Anderson who was unmarried at that time had a female over 45 in his household.
CHILDREN OF HENRY STURDIVANT
In Nov. Of 1797 Oliver Fitts was appointed Guardian of 6 of the children of Henry Sturdivant who were under age or born after 1776. They were Elizabeth, William, Henry, Sarah, Drucilla and Anderson. Probably Mary was also underage, but she married in 1796 and would not have needed a Guardian. Two children were of age in 1797. They were Lucy who married in 1791 and Patsy.
The 1786 State Census and the 1790 Census both show 5 females in the household of Henry Sturdivant which would mean 4 daughters born before 1786. The other two daughters of Henry Sturdivant were born after 1790.
1. Lucy Sturdivant born ca 1773.
Charles Glover to Lucy Sturdivant Dec. 26, 1791 Warren Co. NC.
Bondsman: Richard Glover Wit: M. D. Johnson
|
The family of Charles Glover also lived along Hawtree Creek in Warren Co. NC.
Charles Glover bought a flax wheel at the sale of the property of Henry Sturdivant.
The only Sturdivants living along Hawtree Creek were Henry and Randolph Sturdivant.
Randolph Sturdivant married Dicy Rainey May 27, 1776. If Lucy was his daughter she
would have only been 14 years old at her marriage.
Charles and Lucy Glover lived a few years in Cabarrus County NC before moving to Rowan County NC by 1812. He died in Rowan County Nov. 9, 1839. Lucy died aftaer Feb. 1840.
2. Patsy Sturdivant married William Ballard between 1802 and1804.
She was not a minor in the 1797 record. She was thus born before 1776 and was at
least 28-30 years old when she married William Ballard.
The Deed records show that she was closely related to Polly Stark Sturdivant.
She was probably the mother of Polly Stark Sturdivant.
Warren County NC Deed Bk 17, P 54---- 20 Jan 1802.

Warren County NC Deed Bk 17, P 95---- 11 Aug 1804.
William Ballard of Warren County to Polly Stark Sturdivant infant [sic] of Warren for good will, love, and affection etc - - - granted Polly S. Sturdivant 89 A which was the land whereon the said William now lives, bounded by William Kimball's line, Elizabeth Beasley's, Coln Benjamin Hawkin's, and Amy Bell's lines ... and further William gives Polly one bay mare, one cow and calf, and all property real and personal ...that William and his wife Patsy have privilege of selling, trading (and etc.) during their life or of the survivor... If William and Patsy have any children, then said property is to be equally divided between Polly and the children.

Warren County NC Deed Bk 23, P 29 ---- 6 Jan 1820.
Polly S. Sturdivant and Patsy Ballard to Richard Boyd for $25
Whereas William Ballard did by deed of date 11 Aug 1804, Warren registry, gave to said Polly and Patsy same right of inheritance after his death to a certain tract of land which will fully appear by reference ...
Wit: Henry Fitts. Proved by Fitts at Nov Court 1825.
/s/ Polly x S. Sturdivant /s/ Patsy x Ballard
|
There seems no reasonable reason why William Ballard would be giving to a sister of his wife so much land and so much personal property. Perhaps Polly Stark Sturdivant was an illigitimate child of Patsy Sturdivant or perhaps she had been previously married briefly to a man named Stark. The middle name of Stark may be a clue to the father of Polly Sturdivant.

This Deed proves that Polly Stark Sturdivant was the granddaughter, not the daughter of Sarah Rainey Sturdivant. Her mother Patsy Sturdivant Ballard was probably deceased by then.

James Moree does not appear on the 1800 Census of Warren County NC and seems to have moved from the area. He may be the James Moree on the 1820 Census of Sumter County SC. He most probably was the James Morey on the 1830 Census of Twiggs County GA who was age 60-70. Living with him was a female age 30-40 and 2 slaves. Mary Sturdivant may have been deceased by that time as the 30-40 year old female is too young to be Mary. Living nearby was Alfred Morey, son of James who later lived in Worth County GA. Descendants in the Alfred Morey/Moree family believe that James and Mary (Sturdivant) Moree are the parents of Alfred Morey/Moree and that they lived in South Carolina before Georgia. More research needs to be done on this family.

This 18 acres would have been William Sturdivants part of his father Henrys 200 acres.
William Sturdivant does not appear on the 1810 Warren Co. NC Census. Between 1806 and 1808 he went to Adams County MS where he married Sarah Perry in 1808. He served in the War of 1812 from Mississippi in the same Militia as Henry Sturdivant. He appear on the 1816 and the 1827 Tax Lists of Adams County MS. He probably died 1827-1830 in either Adams County or Wilkinson County MS. A Mrs. Mary Sturdivant born 1790-1810 appears on the 1830 Census of Wilkinson County MS. Also in her household were another female born 1790-1810 and a male born 1810-1820. Henry Oliver Sturdivant who was born ca 1814 was probably the son born 1810 1820. He lived and died in Wilkinson County MS.
