Hawkins Co TN Deed Bk 11 pg. 121 Nov. 14, 1814 Jan. 3, 1823 (Registered)

Amos Widdle and Robert Widdle to William Nichols, all of Hawkins Co TN…$200
60 acres in Hawkins County on the north side of Clinch River on the river bank joining a line between said Amos Widdle and John Jalion, old Douswell Rogers' back line, the tract owned by Fisher (or Batz, agent)…line of Shadrick Monk deceased
Witnesses: Edmond Rice, Doswell Rogers, Ezekiel Monk.
Proved Feb. 1815 by Rice and Rogers.
Mary, wife of Shadrack Monk did not sign with him in the 1809 deed. She was probably deceased at that time.

Shadrack Monk moved from Russell County probably in 1809 or 1810. He sold his land in March of 1809 and probably left not long after that time. He appears on the 1810 tax list of Hawkins County TN. He does not appear on the 1812 list, and the 1814 Hawkins County deed said he was deceased. Thus he probably died 1810-12 Hawkins Co TN.

Children of Shadrack and Mary Monk

The Russell County VA Deed Book 8, P 234 Oct. 5, 1829 lists the heirs of Cornelius Roberts. Mary Roberts Monk was dead by that time. Her heirs are listed as follows:

Joseph Riddle and Rhoda his wife formerly Rhoda Monk of the State of Tennessee
John Monk
Biddy Smith formerly Biddy Monk
Holt Colley and Betsy his wife, formerly Betsy Monk
Ezekiel Monk
________ Gibson and Peggy his wife formerly Peggy Monk
Polly Monk and
Milly Monk all of Lee County Virginia

The 1829 Russell Co VA deed listing the heirs of Cornelius Roberts lists all of the heirs of Mary Roberts Monk as living in Lee County VA except for Rhoda Monk Riddle. However the Monk family never appeared on the records of Lee Co VA. The 1814 Hawkins County Tennessee deed placed the land of Shadrack Monk as north of the Clinch River. The only part of Hawkins Co north of the Clinch River in 1814 was District 5 which is the northwestern corner of that County. This area is in present Hancock County. Hancock County Tennessee joins Lee County Virginia on the north. No doubt the boundaries between Virginia and Tennessee were vague in that time period, especially since the area was mountainous. Thus the Monk family really lived in what is today Hancock County Tennessee.

1. The Joseph Riddle family settled in Cumberland County KY.
Cornelius Roberts’ children Jesse Roberts and Archibald Roberts also lived in Cumberland
County KY in the early 1800’s

2. John Monk lived and died in the Hawkins County TN area which later became Hancock County.

3. Biddy Monk married a Smith, probably Benjamin Smith who lived near the other members of the Monk family in Cumberland County KY. Benjamin Smith was listed next to Jesse Gibson on the 1840 Cumberland County KY Census.

4. Elizabeth/Betsy Monk married Holt Colley. No Holt Colley has been found in the records, and Holt was very probably his middle name. Several Colley families lived in Russell County VA. She may be the daughter of George Holt Colley. Shadrack Monk left Russell County VA about 1809. His daughter Elizabeth born ca 1792 may have married before the family moved to the Hawkins County TN area.

5. Ezekiel Monk settled in Cumberland County KY.

6. Peggy Monk was the same person as Margaret Monk. Peggy is the nickname for Margaret. Her husband was Jesse Gibson. They lived first in the Hawkins County TN area, then moved to Cumberland County KY and to Clinton County KY after 1841. She is shown as the 6th child in the listing of the names in the deed but her oldest child was born by 1810-12 so she may have been just older than Ezekiel born ca 1794. On Census records she is shown as being born 1796 (1850 Census) or 1792 (1860 Census).

7. Polly and Milly/Amelia have not been found in records.

8. The name of Susannah, the youngest child of Shadrack and Mary Monk, does not appear on the Deed. This Deed was drawn up in 1829 long after the death of both Shadrack Monk and Mary Roberts. Probably the name of this child was forgotten by those who compiled
the Deed. She is proven to be a child by tradition in her family. They were living in 1850 in Scott County VA but had moved to Cumberland County KY by 1860. In 1860 their son, Cornelius Coop, was living in the household of Ezekiel Monk.
