George Gibson Sr. may have been a relative of Jesse Gibson. Indian Creek runs through the extreme western corner of Lee County VA flowing west and southwest. It crosses into Tennessee about 4 miles east of the Cumberland Gap. Just across the State line in Lee County on Indian Creek is Gibson Station.
In 1812 Jesse Gibson was listed on Hawkins County on the part of the tax list which would have been just acress the state line from the Indian Creek part of Lee County VA. This area was later cut off to form Hancock County TN. The Jesse Gibson on the 1812 Hawkins County Tennessee tax list and the Jesse Gibson on the 1814 Lee County Virginia land tax list are probably the same person.

Based on Census records Jesse and Margaret Gibson had 14 children or possibly as many as 16 children. Sixteen children seems almost an impossibility since eight of them would have been born 1830-36. More likely the Census figures are somewhat in errer.
However, the oldest child of Jesse and Margaret Gibson, Mary/Polly Gibson who married James Isaac Sidwell, was already married on the 1830 Census. Her oldest child, Archibald Sidwell, was born in 1829. Therefore Jesse and Margaret Gibson probably had 15 children.
Some children of Jesse and Margaret Gibson probably died young as the Cumberland County Deed record for Jesse Gibson selling his land reserved 1/4 acre where some graves lie not far from the house on the hill. Also buried there may have been John Gibson who was probably the father of Jesse Gibson. Of these 15 childlren, only five were sons. The marriages of nine of the 10 daughters are unknown.
Jesse and Margaret Gibson on the 1860 Clinton County KY Census were Household No. 411-411. Household No. 457-457 was Mahala Gibson, age 48 and her children, Emaline age 22, Jesse age 20, Claiborn age 18, Alvis age 12 and Granville age 8. She may have been the widow of the oldest son of Jesse and Margaret Gibson, especially since she named a son Jesse. This family has not been located on the 1850 Census. |
