Will of John Ashbrook
Mary Elwell married (2) Amariah Ballenger (Declaration of Intention to Marry Jan. 1751 Haddonfield Monthly Meeting, Quakers)

Mary Ashbrook is placed as a child of the first wife because she would have been only 16 at the time of her marriage if she was the child of the marriage to Mary Elwell. Also she is not mentioned in the will of Amariah Ballenger.

In 1758 when Amariah Ballenger made his will, he named children Samuel and Amariah under age and one unborn child. These 3 children would be half brothers and sisters of Hannah and Thomas Ashbrook.

In his will Amariah Ballenger mentions brothers Joshua and Thomas. Joshua Ballenger, son of Thomas Ballenger deceased, married Martha Straton in 1741. He was the right age to be the brother of the Amariah Ballenger who married Mary ElwelL, widow of John Ashbrook. If this identification is correct, this Amariah Ballenger was the son of a Thomas Ballenger.

Amariah Ballenger Jr., son of Thomas deceased, married Ruth Collins in 1744. This was very likely the first marriage of Amariah Ballenger who later married Mary Elwell, widow of John Ashbrook. A daughter of Samuel Ward married into the Collins family, further showing the close relationships of all these families. The granddaughter of Samuel Ward was Hannah, wife of Aaron Ashbrook.

To sons Joseph (under age), John, Daniel and James, homefarm; land (100 acres)
on Great Timber Creek, 98 acres adjoining William Clarke bought of John Ashbrook deceased.

Notes: Apparently John1 Ashbrook left his home farm to his son John2 Ashbrook who sold the 100 or 98 acres to his brother-in-law Daniel Hillman . This was probably the 100 acres of land that John1 Ashbrook bought in 1688 from Samuel Coles.

Notes: "Son" and "daughter-in-law" were terms often used in old documents for step-children. Susannah and Thomas Ashbrook were the two children of the marriage of Mary ELwell to John2 Ashbrook. Susannah Ashbrook was probably the same person as the Hannah Ashbrook who married James Gibson Jan. 8, 1768. Thomas Ashbrook also married into the Gibson family. His wife was Ann Gibson. James Gibson and Ann Gibson may have been brother and sister.

Both Amariah Ballenger and Mary Ashbrook, widow of John2 Ashbrook, were Quakers.
These facts plus other information show that John1 and John2 Ashbrook were Quakers.
The following information shows that the Ballenger and Gibson familes of Gloucester County were Quakers.

Marriages Out of Meeting
Ann Ashbrook 6th month 1779

Thomas Ashbrook 6th month 1779

Note: These records show that Thomas3 Ashbrook was a Quaker in 1773. He and Ann Gibson married outside the Meeting in 1779 and had ceased to be Quakers as of that date.

Very probably Ann Gibson, wife of Thomas Ashbrook, was the daughter of one of the Joseph Gibsons in these records, probably the daughter of Joseph Gibson Jr. and Sarah Lord. They named their first son John after John2 Ashbrook and their second son Joseph.

All of the Ballingers listed in these records were most likely close kin to the Amariah Ballenger who married the widow of John2 Ashbrook.
