| Cornelius was reputedly tall and wide shouldered and very strong. It is said that he could kill a steer with his fist by a blow to the head. A poignant tradition is that "he loved his wife to death." Apparently they would wrestle and scuffle and he loved her very much. In a wrestling session he broke her back. There is no proof that this is true. However, she died prior to him between 1843 and 1850.
Lucinda Roberts born ca 1834, died May 1850 Pike County KY of bilious Fever, was possibly a daughter of Cornelius4 Roberts. Cornelius Roberts was about 10 years old when the James Roberts family moved to Kentucky from Russell County VA. He grew up on Shelby Creek in what is now southern Pike Co, KY and married Nancy Stanley 16 Apr 1820. It is possible one of them was married before because the couple already had 2 sons living with them on the 1820 census. Nancy Stanley was the daughter of Joseph Stanley An 1818 Pike County Kentucky deed says "where Cornelius Roberts now lives". By later census records, we know that son James was born possibly as early as 1814, and son Jesse was born 1815-20. Perhaps this couple had children prior to the marriage, which was not uncommon partly because it was not easy to get into town to get a license. Cornelius and Nancy Roberts had 14 children, 8 boys and 6 girls, according to various census records and possibly more. The names for 6 boys and 6 girls are known. One boy could have died young, or William Newsom b 1823 who was bound to Cornelius Roberts in Pike Co, may be one of the males on the census. |
