Jeremiah Jeffery
|
|
Jacob Tally was the husband of Mourning Roberts. Jeremiah Jeffrey was the father-in-law of Abraham Roberts.
Census records show that the following children of Nathan Roberts were born in Tennessee:
1. Jeremiah Roberts born Jan. 9, 1801
2. Mary Roberts born circa 1805
3. Cornelius Roberts born 1807
4. Matthew B. Roberts born circa 1809
5. Elizabeth W. Roberts born circa 1810
6. Rachel Woods Roberts born Dec. 29, 1812
7. Hannah Woods Roberts born April 17, 1814
8. Jalie Roberts born Feb. 5, 1816
Nathan Roberts probably lived in what is now Anderson Co Tennessee when he married. He lived in Anderson Co from 1799-1805. If he is the Nathan Roberts of the 1807 land entry record, he moved from Anderson to Roane County in 1806 or 1807. It is not known where he lived in the five year period between 1807 and 1812. He was in Franklin County by 1812 as was his brother Daniel and sister Mourning. His sister Sinai was living in Franklin County by 1820. Sinai Anderson and her husband Peter lived in Anderson Co Tennessee at the same time that Nathan Roberts lived there.
Nathan Roberts must have lived in Franklin Co Tennessee from 1812 until 1816. He may have lived in Franklin Co Tennessee in 1817 as he probably did not move to Tuscaloosa Co Alabama until late 1817. Tuscaloosa County was formed in 1818 from the Cherokee and Choctaw Cession of 1816. Probably few settlers lived in this area until late 1817 and 1818.
Daniel Roberts moved from Franklin Co Tennessee between 1813 and 1816 to Madison County Alabama. By 1819 he was living in the area of Pickens County Alabama. Sinai Roberts remained in Franklin County Tennessee with her family. Mourning Roberts and husband Jacob Tally were living in Jackson Co Alabama by 1821. Amelia Roberts and husband Edward Frost were in Madison County Alabama by 1812.

Ebenezer Baptist Church, now First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa, was formed Jan. 24, 1818 by a small group of people meeting at the home of Dr. Benjamin Higginbottam near the falls of the Black Warrior. The names of the original members have been lost but the constitution of the Church is recorded in Book IV and is on record at First Baptist Church. The following is a direct quote from this Minute Book:
On the 24th of Jan. 1818, we, the members of the United Baptist Denomination lettered off from various churches and settled in this vicinity, met in conference at the house of Dr. Benjamin Higginbottam near the falls of the Black Warrior, wishing to be constituted a Gospel Church called for that purpose our beloved Brethren in the Ministry, James Baynes and Nathan Roberts to look into our strength, and, if they deem it expedient, constitute us a Gospel Church.
We the undersigned do certify that we were legally called by the Conference at the time and place above stated, for the purpose of examining their strength and constituting them a Gospel Church. We proceeded to the work by looking into their strength. Finding them well recommended by their letters, we judged them fully ripe for constitution, we therefore constituted them a Gospel Church following the following Articles of Faith. /s/ James Baynes /s/ Nathan Roberts
Ebenezer was one of the original 10 churches that constituted the Cahawba Association, which met for the first time at the Cahawba Valley Meetinghouse in Cahawba County on Oct. 2, 1818. Ebenezer church was represented by Pastor Nathan Roberts and John Baker. The church reported 53 members and sent $4 for the expenses of the association. The next meeting was scheduled to be held at Ebenezer Meetinghouse, Tuscaloosa County, near the falls of the Black Warrior on Sat. preceding the 4th Lord's day in October next.

The other son born 1820-1825 cannot be certainly identified. Nathan and Abigail Roberts had 8 sons. Of these 8 sons Jeremiah and Cornelius were married in 1830 and gone from home. Matthew was not married but may have been gone from home as he was 21 years of age in 1830. If William Roberts was the same person as the William Roberts in the household of Joseph Benton Roberts in 1850, he was born circa 1817 and would be the son born 1815-1820. The other son born 1820-1825 would be either Nathan or John.
Mississippi Records
Nathan Roberts and all of his children except Jeremiah Roberts and Mary who married William Hancock moved to Choctaw County Mississippi between 1830 and 1840. Jeremiah Roberts moved directly from Alabama to Texas. Mary (Roberts) Hancock lived in 1830 and 1840 in Copiah Co Mississippi.
The move of the Nathan Roberts family to Mississippi took place in about 1834. In 1830 the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed with the Choctaw Indians. The Choctaws ceded all the remainder of their lands east of the Mississippi River. Between 1831 and 1833 the Indians left this area of Mississippi to settle west of the Mississippi. Choctaw Co. Mississippi was formed in 1833 from the Choctaw Cession. The places of birth of the children of the sons and daughters of Nathan Roberts show that they were still in Alabama in 1833 and in Mississippi in 1834-35.
1. Cornelius Benton Roberts had son David P. born circa 1833 Alabama and son John M. born March 1835 Mississippi.
2. Matthew B. Roberts had son William born circa 1832 Alabama and son John Thomas born circa 1835 Mississippi.
3. Elizabeth Roberts married Jesse Beasley 1828 Greene Co Alabama and lived in 1830 in Fayette Co Alabama. They then moved to Choctaw Co Mississippi. Their son Wyatt S. was born circa 1831 in Alabama and their son Mathew was born Feb. 1834 in Mississippi.
4. Rachel W. Roberts and husband Silas Wilson had son William D. born 1830 Alabama and son John H. born circa 1834 Mississippi according to the 1850 census.
5. All of the children of Hannah W. Roberts and husband Toliver Keeton were born in Mississippi. The oldest was born Nov. 18, 1834.

Joseph Benton Roberts did not marry until 1869. Two important questions arise concerning the 1850 Choctaw Co census for the household of Joseph B. Roberts.
Who was Rebecca Roberts born circa 1784?
Who was William Roberts born circa 1817?
William Roberts was the right age to be the son of Nathan Roberts. The W. Powell Roberts Family Tree gives a son of Nathan Roberts as William Roberts. The most likely explanation for this household is that William Roberts was the brother of Joseph Benton Roberts. Very few Roberts families lived in Choctaw Co Mississippi in the period 1840-1850.
If William and Joseph Benton Roberts were brothers, then who was Rebecca Roberts? One possible answer is that Abigail Roberts died between 1840 and 1850, and Nathan remarried to Rebecca. Many of the Choctaw Co. Mississippi records were destroyed by fire. The probate and marriage records for Choctaw County for this time period are lost. The deeds are said to still be extant. They might shed further light on the death of Nathan Roberts and proof of whether he married a second time.
