Alabama Records

The earliest records of Jeremiah Roberts come from Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, where Jeremiah moved with his father, Nathan Roberts, when he was a teenager. Nathan was one of the founders of the Bethel Baptist Church, and became thier pastor.

The following is an excerpt from an article written by Jeremiah Roberts' fourth son.

Frontier Times, Vol. 7, No. 12, Sept. 1930

From an Old Timer

by Ben M. Roberts

My father came to Texas about the year 1822, as the record shows, from Alabama. He was a widower with 2 children. When he left Alabama to come to Texas, he left the 2 children in the care of their grandparents. Father had drawn a single man's part of land in Caldwell County, near where Lockhart is now. He had to go back to Alabama and bring his two children to Texas to prove that he was the head of a family before he could get more. Afterwards he sold 200 acres to a man to fatten an old Spanish horse on crab grass and received an old saddle and 3 plugs of tobacco to boot. He rode this old horse to Alabama to bring his 2 children to show that he had a family of his own.

The W. Powell Roberts Tree says that Jeremiah Roberts came to Texas in 1824 rather than 1822 which must be correct as he and his wife, who was still living in Aug. of 1824, were still members of the Bethel Baptist Church at that time. She probably died late in l824, and Jeremiah Roberts made the trip alone to Texas to establish himself in that new area. He remained a widower for about 21 years until he married his second wife Sarah Nash May 11, 1845. According to family records the name of his first wife was Sarah Sharp, and their first son was named John Sharp Roberts.

Bicentennial Minutes of Seguin--Guadalupe County 1976

The first meeting of the shareholders of Seguin was held on Sept. 22, 1838 at the rude cabin of Abraham Roberts under the trees at Elm Springs. Jeremiah Roberts presided as chairman. The question of naming the town was introduced. James Campbell proposed the name "Walnut Springs" which carried by a vote of 16 to 9. It appears many of the shareholders disliked the name "Walnut Springs", and in fact, there was already another town in Texas by that name. Two new names were brought forth for consideration. Tuscumbia, derived from the title of a song and dance tune popular at the time, and Seguin, in honor of Juan N. Seguin, a Texas patriot who led the only company comprised totally of Mexicans during the revolution, and who had been with Sam Houston at San Jacinto. The vote was 18 to 7, and the name Seguin became the permanent name of our town.

Account of Benjamin McCulloch Roberts

Frontier Times, Volume 7, No 12, Sept. 1930

From an Old Timer
I am an old timer of this grand old State, born and lived in it all my life.

I well remember the first Indians I ever saw, young as I was. There were 15 of the redskins. My half brother went out to get the horses to tie them to the gallery posts, for the moon was old enough to begin to shine. The Indians passed in sight of the house and saw brother John driving up the horses. He being afoot, they tried to cut him off and capture him and the horses, but his shouts for help, attracted my father’s attention, and he ran out of the house. In his excitement he picked up an old gun without a lock. But it did the work of saving my brother, for seeing the gun the Indians remained at a distance. I got so scared I ran under the bed, bumped my head and wanted to cry from the pain, but through fear that the Indians would find me, I postponed that part of it.

Nine children were born in our family, 2 sisters and myself still living. Father built a log cabin and put in a little farm. He made the finest corn crop he had seen and said he had to chop the ears of the corn in a trough so his oxen could chew it. The next year he decided to drill a part of the corn, as he expressed it, and said the next year, it was all ox corn.

In 1856 and 1857 we had 18 months drouth. I was then 13 years old, we ran out of breadstuff, and father sent to Illinois for corn to make bread. This corn was sent down the Mississippi River on a steamboat to New Orleans. Then on to Indianola, and while on the Gulf there was a great storm at sea and the ship could not come into port for three weeks. At this time we were without bread, but we were milking 40 longhorn cows, and my mother pressed two big cheese a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. With dried beef and cheese we managed to make out very well until the corn was delivered. When it arrived we found it was hard yellow corn. There was a little water mill on what was called Town Branch, erected by Mr. Sullivan. This corn was so hard the miller had to throw it back into the hopper to be ground over, and then it was made into pretty fair grits.

With all the hardships we had to undergo, the people were happier than they are now because there were few of them, and a man could rely on another’s word. A man’s bank in those days was his pocket, and his word was his bond. I have seen my father loan a neighbor as much as $300 at a time without a note or a scratch of a pen, and he was always paid back promptly.
Goodwishes to Frontier Times.

Jeremiah Roberts served with Ben McCulloch, and they had many fierce engagements with the Indians, being in campaigns against the redskins for a number of years. When they were about to disband, both being widowers, they made an agreement that if they married again the first boy to come into the family would be named after each other. I being the first boy, got the name Ben McCullough Roberts, of which I have always been proud. Though I never had the pleasure of seeing my father's illustrious comrade.
