Cornelius Benton Roberts was born in Tennessee in 1807, the fourth of Nathan Roberts' 15 children. He married Rhoda Linsey in Tuscaloosa Co. Alabama in 1828. They had 5 children there before moving to Chocktaw Co. Mississippi. In the 10 years they stayed in Mississippi, 6 more children were born. In 1845 the family moved further west to Cherokee Co. Texas, the same year that Texas became the 28th state and just before the start of the Mexican War. After 10 months the family moved on to Navarro County and settled in Mercer's Colony. The colony failed and two years later Cornelius moved to Milam County and settled on Salado's Creek. He served with the Ranger company there called The Salado Mounted Troops and fought for the South in the Civil War. Later, he helped organize Bell County. The last 2 children were born there, bringing the total to 13. Cornelius died while on a cattle drive in San Saba Co. sometime during the 1860's.

Reminiscences of Mr. John M. Roberts April 20, 1916

I was born in Choctaw County Mississippi March 2lst, 1835.

In 1845 my father, C. B. Roberts, left Mississippi for Texas. After a very pleasant journey of 28 days we arrived in Cherokee County TX near where the present town of Rusk was afterwards located. After a stay of about 10 months, we started in 1846 for Navarro County. I was then 11 years old and there saw my first buffalo. In March 1847 we were preparing to make a crop when the Death Angel, for the first time, visited our family, claiming for its victim my brother, Matthew B. Roberts, l3 years of age, who died from an attack of typhoid fever. We remained there 2 years and made 2 crops.

My father settled in Mercer's Colony. As Mercer was not able to settle the required number of families in his Colony, as agreed upon in his contract, his Colony enterprise failed, so, in l848 my father sold his claim there and started West. We stopped at Georgetown and stayed there three weeks, then we took the old Military road (from Austin to Waco) and stopped on the Lampasas River at a spring, afterwards known as the Joel Blair spring but now referred to as the Brookshire spring. While we were there a heavy snow fell and while the snow was on the ground my brother N. T. Roberts, 18 years of age, killed a bear. After spending two or three weeks there we broke camp and went down on Salado Creek and settled on what is known as the Manchaca 3 leage grant, on the South side of the creek, opposite the present Summers Mill.

History of Bell County Texas

From 1847 to 1849 several more of the original colonists of Little River returned to their former homes in this community. Among these were John Fulcher and family (l847 or l848). Around the Fulcher home were grouped several newly arrived families--so that the community was known as "Fulcher's Colony".
On the Salado Creek were James K. Blair, C. B. Roberts, Frank Morrill, Reese Morrill, E. N. Goode, Mr. Kuykendall, Samuel Wheat and Archibald Willingham, at the Salado Springs. At Childers Mill on the Lampasas were Joel D. Blair, Goldsby Childers, Robert Childers (and others).

Joel D. Blair was the husband of Emily Elizabeth Roberts, daughter of Cornelius Benton Roberts.

Data from Francis8 Warren Roberts

Cornelius served with Captain Robert B. Halley's Ranger Company known as The Salado Mounted Troops, and in 1861 went to accept the surrender of the Federal forces at Camp Colorado and Fort Chadbourne for the Confederate Government.

Cornelius Benton Roberts was one of five special commissioners elected to organize Bell County in l850.
