Rachel Van Schaick/Vanscayoc was possibly the daughter of Aaron Van Schaick and Hester Van Duersen.
She was born March 9, 1752 probably New York City.
She died probably 1827-1830 Meade Co KY. Buried Stith Cemetary, Meade County KY.

NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY

Family Records state that Alexander Buchanan lived in both New York and New Jersey.

State of Indiana, County of Hendricks

I, John A. Buchanan, swear that the foregoing statement is true to the best of my knowledge and believe this
/s/ John A. Buchanan mark

Subscribed and sworn to before me this 19th day of July 1877.

Note: John3 A. Buchanan was the son of Levi2 Buchanan (Alexander1)

John A. Buchanan, in reference to what he knows personally and as to what he knows from tradition.

My Grandfather ‘s name was Alexander Buchanan who was born in the year 1752. My Grandmother’s name before she married was Rachel Vanscayic. They were married in the year 17__ in the state of New York where they resided for a few years. They moved from New York to the State of New Jersey where they resided until after the close of the Revolutionay War.

From New Jersey they moved to Virginia. From Virginia to North Carolina. From North Carolina back to Virginia. I do not know what length of time they resided in each of those states.

From Virginia they moved to Kentucky about the year of 1793. From Kentucky they moved to Clermont County Ohio where he died about the year 1827. My Grandmother returned to Mead County Kentucky where she died about the year 18__.

Alexander Buchanan came from Scotland when a young man. My Grandmother Rachel Vanscayoc was from Holland. Do not know whether she was born in Holland or in America. But if she was born in Holland her parents came with her for her parents lived in New York.

They, Alexander Buchanan and Rachel Buchanan, resided near Trenton, New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. He was taken prisoner at his home near Trenton, New Jersey, remained a prisoner about 7 months when he made his escape.

I do not know what his father’s name was. He had a brother by the name of James who came over from Scotland with him, but he, James Buchanan, returned to Scotland and left no heirs to my knowledge. He had 2 other brothers. One, I think settled in Pennsylvania, the other in Virginia. I know nothing further about them.

I have heard my father speak of my Grandmother’s father and mother but never heard of my Grandmother having any brothers or sisters.

Alexander Buchanan was in early life a school teacher. Later in life he was a minister of the Baptist Church.

They had born unto them 12 children of whom 7 were boys to wit: Jacob, Joseph, Levi, Reuben, First Simeon, Second Simeon and Benjamin. There were 5 girls, to wit: Jean, Martha, Rachel, Mary and Nancy.

John A. Buchanan, son of Levi, was born circa 1807. He would have known his grandfather at leat 13 or more years and lived close to him.

A second account of the life of Alexander Buchanan was written by James4 Buchanan, son of Alexander3 (Joseph2, Alexander1). He was born in 1832 several years after his grandfather died and would never have known him. This second account seems less likely to be accurate in all the details.

Statement Concerning the Identity and Genealogy of James Buchanan
(great-grandson of Alexander1)

I have always understood that my great-grandfather Alexander Buchanan was a native of Scotland and that he was born the 4th day of Dec. 1752.

That he came to America and lived in New York City. He was in the Revolutionary War of the AD 1776, and he served as a soldier in said war. He was taken prisoner by the enemy and kept 9 months or thereabouts. He taught school the greater part of his life. He was considered a fine scholar. He was an ordained Baptist preacher and preached during the latter part of his life.

He was married to Rachel Vanscoyoc or Vanschaick, a native of Holland, on the 24th day of Feb. AD 1772. Rachel Vanscoyoc was born March the 9th day AD 1752. Joseph Buchanan, son of Alexander Buchanan and my grandfather was born in New York City. Joseph Buchanan removed to the state of Illinois in 1819.

seven years after the marriage of Alexander Buchanan and Rachael Van Schaick.
Whether they lived those 7 years in New York or in New Jersey is not known.

VIRGINIA RECORDS
Sometime between 1779 and 1784 Alexander Buchanan moved to Virginia.

The Alexander Buchanan listed in the Montgomery Co VA tax list in 1782 was probably the Alexander Buchanan who made a will in 1798 in Wythe Co VA.

The Tax Lists show that they were still living in Wythe County VA in 1793.

KENTUCKY RECORDS

A History of Kentucky Baptists, Vol. 2, P 62 by J. H. Spencer

Alexander Buchanan was probably a native of Pennsylvania. He served as an officer in the American Army during the Revolutionary War. At the close of the war, he emigrated to Woodford County KY. He labored with the pioneer preachers of that region a few years, after which he moved to Ohio and settled in Vermilion River. Here he died, much respected about 1827.

He is said to have been a preacher of great usefulness. He loved the gospel and often expressed an ardent desire to preach as long as he lived. The last evening that he remained on earth, he held worship with his family, and among other blessings he asked the Lord with great earnestness that he might be able to speak as long as he lived on earth. That night he ate supper and went to bed in usual health. Before the morning light returned, while he slept sweetly and peacefully by the side of the wife of his youth, his spirit passed away so quietly that she knew nothing of his departure til he had already crossed “the River”.

Several errors appear in this acccount. No records have been found showing that he lived at any time in Pennsylvania. He moved from New Jersey to Virginia and after that to Woodford County KY. No records have been found showing he lived on the Vermilion River which runs through Erie, Huron and Ashland Counties Ohio in the northern part of Ohio.

CLERMONT COUNTY OHIO RECORDS

The notarized affidavit of John A. Buchanan says that Alexander Buchanan moved to Clermont County Ohio where he died in 1827. This agrees with the History of Kentucky Baptists.

However a History of Hendricks County Indiana in the section regarding Levi2 Buchanan says that he moved to Clermont County Ohio and died there Sept. 12, 1824 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Miami Township, Clermont County Ohio. Apparently this information came from the Levi2 Buchanan family. The records show a strong indication that Alexander did live in Miami Township and that he probably moved to Clermont County with the family of his oldest son,

Jacob Buchanan has not been found on any records, but his family shows up in Miami Township, Clermont County.

On page 55 of this Census, also in Miami Township, was Elias Porter who might possibly have been the same person as Silas Porter, son-in-law of Alexander Buchanan who married Nancy Buchanan.

Children of Jacob2 Buchanan appear on the 1850 Census of Clermont County OH in Miami township and also in Symmes township in Hamilton County. Hamilton County joins Clermond County on the west.

Property Holders in Miami Township, Clermont County Ohio in 1826.
Rachel Buchanan, a non-resident, No 2570----Francis Baldwin original owner

Virginia Tolman researched the records of Clermont County OH. According to the original records Rachel Buchanan was listed on 8 acres of land from 1825 until she sold it in 1826. She signed the deed with an X. This Rachel Buchanan must be the widow of Alexander Buchanan. This record would indicate that the death date in 1824 was correct rather than 1827. She would have had the property in her name after the death of Alexander.

The John A. Buchanan affidavit said that Rachel returned to Meade County KY and died there.

The Simon Peter Morgan Bible records state that she died in Meade Co Kentucky and is buried in the Stith Cemetery. This cemetery is called the Meadville Cemetery now and is near the Hill Grove Church and Stith Valley in Meade County. Simeon Buchanan was at one time pastor of the Hill Grove Church. She must have gone to Meade County to live with her son Simeon. He is the only member of this Buchanan family who ever lived in Meade County. He lived in Meade County. from 1822 to 1834. There is no marker for her grave.

She probably died before 1830 as she is not listed in the household of Simeon Buchanan on the 1830 Census.
