Beasley and Related Families
Rev. Mat Beasley of Navarro County TX is a son of Jesse Beasley, who was born in Wilson County TN in 1805, a son of Wiley and Lucy (Parker) Beasley, natives of NC and TN. Wiley Beasley was a son of Ephraim and _______ Harris Beasley, natives of VA. The family has been identified with the Baptist Church and the Democratic party for many years.
Jesse Beasley removed with his parents to Bedford County TN at the age of about 2 years, 12 years later went by wagon to Greene County AL, was there married, and then began farming in Fayette County.
In 1833 he began the same occupation in Choctaw County MS where he was among the pioneer settlers, then went to Chickasaw County, same state, and in 1848 came by wagon to Texas, having spent 13 days in the Mississippi bottoms on account of high water.
He first settled 2 miles east of our subjects home, but in 1880 sold his land to H. H. Burk and then began the cattle business in Throckmorton County.
He died at his sons home Feb. 3, 1892. Politically he identified himself with the Democratic party and while a resident of Fayette County served as Justice of the Peace. He united with the Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 69 years.
Our subjects mother, nee Elizabeth W. Roberts, was born in TN, a daughter of Nathan and Abigal (Bishop) Roberts, natives of North Carolina. Nathan Roberts father was killed by the Indians at the time of the Revolutionary War. The Roberts family is of Irish and the Bishops of Dutch descent.

Roane. There was a small log school house located about 8 miles NE of Corsicana which was formerly called Post Oak School. Beginning about the year 1866 Rev. Leek who lived at Chatfield occasionally preached at this little log school house. As families moved into the vicinity the Rev. Leek organized a Baptist Church at this point and his congregation ws made up of the Beasley family which moved into the community as early as 1840, as well as the Conners who settled in this district about the year 1855. Joe and Ben Bragg and the Roscoe and Cohagen families also lived in this community.
Among the early settlers who located around Post Oak School were the Burke family and the families of the Beasleys, Braggs, Connors, Ellis and Fraziers. Settling of the community increased until, in about 1891, members of the community decided they needed a Post Office. Various named were offered but the name Roane, as suggested by Will Holland, was adopted.
Among the old homes which have a romantic past is the old Beasley home and springs, about 2 miles west of Roane. This historical landmark was familiar to travelers in the early days of the County and many a travel worn immigrant stopped here for fresh water and a few hours rest. Before the Post Office was located mail was distributed from the old Bragg home which was a short distance west of the Beasley home. Ben and Joseph Bragg married sisters who were daughters of the Beasleys. |
