Hiram Roberts was born in 1801, the second child of Jesse Roberts. He married Rachel Jones in 1821 and they had seven children while living in Green Co. KY. In 1836 they moved to Buchanan Co. MO which was then unsettled. In fact, Hiram and Rachel were only able to stay there because they were lucky in avoiding the law. Later, Hiram opened a hotel in Bloomington Township. His other occupations included cabinet maker and justice of the peace. Hiram died on April 25, 1881 of old age, and Rachel, his wife, died only two days later, perhaps of a broken heart.

Biographical Data

History of Buchanan County Missouri
St. Joseph M0, Union Historical Co., l88l.

Settlement of Bloomington Township
Among the earliest settlers of what is now Bloomington Township, was Hiram Roberts. He came to the vicinity of DeKalb in 1836, a year before the county was opened for settlement.

As soon as it was known that squatters had invaded the county, United States troops from Fort Leavenworth were sent to dispossess them. Perhaps the only man who escaped the vigilance of the military was Hiram Roberts, who happened to be over looked, from the secluded location he then occupied.

He lived many years afterward in DeKalb; was a Justice of the Peace; kept the hotel of the town for several years, and was a popular and highly respected citizen. He died in DeKalb, April 25, 1881, at the ripe age of 79 years. Five days after, his wife of nearly equal age with himself, was buried. The inscription on their monument in the cemetery at DeKalb reads as follows:

Hiram Roberts, born Dec. 6, 1801; died April 25, 1881, aged 79 years, 4 months and 19 days. Rachael Roberts, born March 18, 1802; died April 27, l88l, aged 79 years, l month and 9 days.

Buchanan County and St. Joseph Bloomington Township

Among the first settlers of what is now Bloomington Township was Hiram Roberts who came in l836 and who escaped the military raiders. Bloomington is the second township of the southern tier west of the river.

Anderson and Roberts Histories

Rachel and Hiram Roberts came from Kentucky by boat to Weston, Buchanan County, Missouri. From there they went to DeKalb where they opened a hostelry. They opened their doors to those who were homeless and gave them shelter. This couple were devout Methodists and lived by the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Hiram (Roberts) was a cabinet maker. He made fine furniture for the elete in all Buchanan County.

Hiram (Roberts) was also judge of Green Township which permitted him to perform marriage ceremonies and other civic offices in the state.

Hiram died of old age and Rachel laid down on the bed and said "I can't live without him," and she died. They were buried in the same grave and interred in the DeKalb Cemetery.

Rachel Jones was the daughter of William Jones of Green County KY.
She was born March 18, 1802 KY.
She died April 27, 1881, age 79 years, 1 month, 9 days
Buchanan County MO.

Children of Hiram Roberts

In l883 the heirs of Hiram Roberts were listed as Sarah J. Turner, John H.
McDowell, George L. Cook, Charles L. Cook, Mary E. Street, Robert Hill, G. T. Cook, Martha Williams and George W. Anderson.

Sarah J. Turner, George L. Cook, Charles L. Cook, Mary E. Street and G. T. Cook were all children of Lydia (Roberts) Cook, wife of Aaron Cook.

George W. Anderson was the husband of Mary5 Roberts.

Martha Williams received the same amount of money as George W. Anderson which was considerably more than the others received. It is therefore most likely that she was the daughter of Hiram Roberts.

Robert Hill was most probably the son of Elizabeth5 Roberts who married Joseph Hill.

John H. McDowell and Robert Hill received the same amount of money. Also John McDowell was attorney for Robert Hill. They were probably closely related. John H. McDowell may have married a daughter of Elizabeth5 Roberts and Joseph Hill.
