The Buchanan Cemetery, Hendricks County Indiana

The Cemetery is located in Hendricks County Indiana, Liberty Township, 3/4 miles north of US 40 on SR 39 or 150E near the town of Bellville. It is located near the south end of Section 35, Township 14 North, Range 1 West. Davis orchard has planted new apple trees on the left side of the road, and the cemetery is north and west of the orchard. This land originally housed the barn of Levi Buchanan according to Ruth Prichard, a County historian.

The land was purchased by Levi Buchanan in April 1831 from the Federal Government at the Crawfordsville Land Office. The land was farmed by Levi Buchanan and his sons John A. and George W. In 1933 Roy Burns, descendant of Levi Buchanan, had a handwritten list of Buchanan tombstones copied. Some of these tombstones were no longer there in 1964 and 1985. In 1964 Ruth Prichard, historian in Hendricks County, copied the inscriptions of all markers in the Cemetrey at that time. In 1985 Marsha Sorrell, descendant of Levi, visited the Cemetery. Most markers no longer existed. Since that time, several markers have been uncovered by farmers and taken to the Cemetery, the exact location of the grave sites nearby but unknown.
