DAR Patriot Index

Levi Ashbrook born circa 1738. Private soldier----Virginia.
Married (1) Mary Pentacost ( 2) Mary Chenoweth
Died: 1794.

Line-a-Day Book by William A. Ashbrook , P 10.

The eight sons of my great-grandfather, Rev. Levi Ashbrook by his second marriage were
Levi, Aaron, Eli (my grandfather), William, John, Absalom, Thomas and Felix.
Mary was one of the six daughters. The names of the other five unknown.

This list is in error. There were 6 sons and 8 daughters. Levi was a son of the first wife of Levi3 and Felix was the son of Aaron3 and nephew of Levi

Aaron came to Fairfield Co OH in 1805. William, Eli, Thomas and Mary came later bringing their mother after the death of my great-grandfather in 1810.

Levi3 Ashbrook died in 1794.

I am satisfied that she is buried in the old Turkey Run Cemetery. I made two trips there to locate her grave. The first time the cemetery was so overgrown with weeds, briars and poison ivy that search was impossible. The last time, which was on my 61st birthday I found an old sand headstone which had fallen down near the graves of my great-grandparents, Tunis and Abigal Peters, on which was inscribed: "Mary Ashbrook died July 27, 1830, aged 81 years, 9 months and 13 days." This tallies well with other data and Banner Friend who is my best authority on family history shares my belief that this is the grave of my great-grandmother.

There are a score or more of other tombstones of the Ashbrooks and also of the Peterses in this old cemetery. Back to the remotest recesses of my memory I recall hearing my old aunties talk about going to Old School Baptist association meetings at Turkey Run and before I die I hope to attend services in that old Turkey Run church where my grandfather preached for many years.

Line-a-Day Book by William A. Ashbrook, P 14.

Elder Levi Ashbrook, my grandfather, died 1808, twice married, by first marriage, three sons and one daughter. Levi Jr. was one of the sons who removed to Kentucky. My great-grandfather again married. (Mary Pentacost I believe the name of his second wife) They had 7 sons and 7 daughters. The sons were Aaron, Eli (my grandfather), William, John, Abraham, Thomas,Felix. Mary is the only daughter I have been able to definately establish. All of these sons except Abraham, John and Felix came to Ohio. No reliable data of Abraham, John and Felix.

Levi3 Ashbrook had 6 sons, not 7 by his second marriage. Abraham was not his son. William A. Ashbrook has probably confused Abraham and Absalom in this record. In other places he named Absalom and not Abraham. Felix Ashbrook was the son of Aaron3 Ashbrook and nephew of Levi3

Thomas M. Ashbrook born Aug. 1847 in Fairfield County Ohio. His father was Edward P. and mother Margaret Redmond, residents of Amanda Township, Fairfield County. His father's brothers are William in Amanda Township, CedarHill Post Office; Mahlon in St. Joseph, Missouri; Absalom, deceased.

Then he worked in a grist mill in Pickaway County for 3 years, then to Somerset in the same business. He later started a planing mill on the site now occupied by the Snyder Brothers. He also sold mill machinery.

The Ashbrooks are of Scotch descent and seem to have originated in Berkley County VA where 6 sons and 1 daughter are recorded as follows:

John had family----killed by horse in native county.

Thomas went to Washington County PA----had 2 sons----killed by Indians or in war.

James was a noted lawyer who died in his native county.

Moses went to Tennessee and was probably the progenitor of the Nashville Ashbrooks.

Aaron lived Hampshire County, had 2 sons and removed to Kentucky.

Levi---a Baptist preacher----to Hampshire County VA and is great-grandfather of Thomas. He had i son and 3 daughters by his first wife. His second wife was Miss Chinnith. She had 6 sons and 8 daughters.

Levi, son of the first wife, married and went to Kentucky, became wealthy at or near Louisville, then to St. Louis, Missouri where he became stockman and pork packer.

John, son of second wife, married and to Kentucky.

Absalom to Kentucky and died and family moved back to Virginia and then to Ohio.

Aaron went to Fairfield County after his marriage to Miss Peters. His family was 4 sons: Tunis P., John M., James, and E. P. and 4 daughters.

The children of the first wife of Levi3 and John, oldest son of the second wife of Levi3, all moved to Kentucky to Clark and Pendleton Counties.

Most of the children of the second wife of Levi3 moved to the Fairfield/Pickaway Count area of Ohio.
The earliest to come was Absalom to Fairfield County in 1805 followed by Eli and William in 1810 and 1811. Mary Chenoweth, second wife of Levi3, may have accompanied her son Aaron in 1805 or her son William in 1811. There is no older female on the 1820 Census in the households of Aaron, Eli or William Ashbrook. She was probably living with one of her daughters, probably her daughter Mary.

James McBride is listed as a possible husband of the oldest daughter of Levi3 because Levi A. Ashbrook Catherine Lander and Rebecca Joiner sold James McBride their part of the estate of Levi3 Ashbrook. Often one family member bought out the shares of other family member.
