Sidon H. and Amanda Caroline Atkinson Harris settled in Caldwell County perior to March 1852, having moved from Pontotoc County MS by way of Lauderdale Co. TN. Sidon H. Harris was born in Overton Co. TN Nov. 12, 1820, the son of Sidon John Harris. He married Amanda Caroline Atkinson, daughter of Samuel Washington and Nancy Jordan Atkinson, in Pontotoc Co. MS Aug. 9, 1842. She died April 14, 1866. Sidon and Amanda were the parents of the following children (including) Sidon born Nov. 13, 1860, died Jan. 16, 1926 in San Antonio, buried Austin, TX, married (1) Dec. 5, 1882 Mary Lucy Storey (2) Mary Lee Horton.

Sidon Harris, lawyer and realtor, was born on his father’s ranch Nov. 14, 1861. The son of Sidon H. and Amanda Atkinson Harris, he was a descendant of colonial settlers, and on his mother’s side, a direct descendant of Sir John Washington of Islip, England.


Mr. Harris was admitted to the Texas State Bar in 1882 at the age of 21. He married Mary Lucy Storey on Dec. 5, 1882 in Caldwell County and to this union were born Caroline Louise, 1883; Leonidas Sidon, 1886; August Storey, 1889; Kent Clay, 1892; Patrick Sydney, 1894; Gladys Lucy, 1997; Jefferson Storey, 1902. Mary Harris died May 26 1902 when her baby was 4 days old.


On Sept. 20, 1906 Sidon married Mary Lee Horton of Austin. One son, Sidon Jr., born Aug. 28, 1908 married Evalyn Bell Brookshire of Austin on June 7, 1930.


Sidon practiced land law, but due to ill health abandoned the legal profession and turned to Real Estate. When not absorbed in business matters, he wrote numerous short stories, essays, one act plays and poems. He lived in semi retirement until his death on Jan. 16, 1926.

FINAL SERVICES FOR SIDON HARRIS

Funeral services for Sidon Harris of Austin, prominent attorney, who died suddenly in San Antonio Sunday were held at the family home, 805 West 221/2 St., Wed. morning. Services were also held at St. Austin's Chapel, Rev. W. J. Cartwright officiating. Burial followed in Mount Calvary cemetery.


During the past 4 years, he had gone to Southern California and San Antonio for his health and while he selected San Antonio as his residence because of its climate, Austin has always been his home. Mr. Harris, before his retirement 12 years ago, was one of the leading attorneys of the state. After coming to Austin from San Saba County, he began law practice and began buying property in Austin and other sections of the state. Much of this property is still in his name.


He is survived by his widow, 2 daughters: Mrs. W. J. Adams of Port Arthur and Mrs. Ernest Poleskey of Albuquerque, NM and 4 sons: Sidon Harris, a student at University of Texas, Gus Harris of Beaumont Pat and Jefferson Harris of Port Arthur.


Pallbearers were Ireland Graves, Guy Collett, Robert Hambey, J. W. Calhoun, Sterling Fulmore and Richard Conner.

S. S. Harris, Attorney, Dies in Hotel Sunday

Samuel S. Harris, 67, attorney, died Sunday afternoon in his room at a downtown hotel

after an illness of several days. He was a native of Caldwell County and had lived

in San Antonio five years, coming here from Austin where he had practiced law about

30 years.


During the closing years of his life, he had specialized as an examiner of abstracts and titles and had traveled much in the interest of his clients, seeking information on old titles and land grants. He studied law in Lockhart under L. J. Storey, for several years, chairman of the Railroad Commission.


Besides a widow who lives in Austin, he leaves 3 sons, Pat and Jefferson Harris of Port Arthur and Sidon Harris of Austin, 2 daughters, Mrs. W. J. Adams of Port Arthur and Mrs. Ernest Polansky of Albuquerque, NM, 2 sisters and a brother and a number of nieces and nephews in San Antonio.
