NOTES ON WILLIAM SPAULDING BUCHANAN
William S. Buchanan was born in either Adair or Woodford County Kentucky. His father Simeon Buchanan appeared on the tax rolls of Adair County Kentucky in 1810 and 1811 with 80 acres of land. Probably he lived in that area about two years, living near his two brothers, Joseph and Jacob, and his sister Mary Antle. In 1812 Simeon Buchanan again appears on the tax list of Woodford County Kentucky and continued to appear on those lists through 1820. He lived on Clear Creek near other members of his Buchanan family. Simeon Buchanan joined the Baptist church in the Clear Creek church.
In about 1821 Simeon Buchanan moved to the Hardin/Meade/Breckenridge County area of Kentucky when his son William S. was about 10 years old. Simeon Buchanan appeared on the tax rolls of Meade County Kentucky from 1824 through 1833 No tax lists for 1834 are extant. About 1835 he moved from Meade County to Grayson County. He first appeared on the Grayson County Kentucky tax lists in 1836, and he lived in Grayson County the rest of his life. William S. Buchanan grew to maturity in Meade County, and both of his marriages are recorded in that county. Very likely his name and the names of his brothers and sisters were listed on the roll of one of the churches that Simeon Buchanan served as minister in Meade County. Probably the home church for this family was the Hill Grove Church in southern Meade County.
August 2, 1830 William S. Buchanan married Elizabeth Shacklett, daughter of Blancet Shacklette and Rachel Wimp. The Shacklette family lived in the Hill Grove area of Meade County and both Blancet Shacklette and his wife Rachel are buried in the Hill Grove Cemetery. The bondsman for this marriage was Jesse S. Hayden. The Hayden family intermarried with the Shacklette family, and William S. Buchanan's sister Martha is said to have married James Hayden. William S. Buchanan and Elizabeth Shacklette had one daughter, Nancy Catherine, born July 5, 1831. Elizabeth, wife of William S. Buchanan, died sometime between the birth of Nancy Catherine in July 1831 and Dec. of 1835 when William S. Buchanan married Elenor Taber. She might have died in childbirth since William S. Buchanan and wife Elizabeth had no other children. Nancy Catherine Buchanan was evidently living with her father William S. and his second wife Elenor Taber in 1840 census in Pope County Arkansas as a daughter age 5-10 appears on that census. However by 1850 she was listed in the household of John Cain in Meade County Kentucky, listed as age 18. She married in Meade County Oct. 25, 1855 to Benjamin C. Saunders. Her half-brothers and sisters, children of William S. Buchanan and his second wife, Elenor Taber, knew little of Nancy Catherine the rest of their lives.
Dec. 30, 1835 William S. Buchanan married Elenor Taber in Meade County Kentucky. She was the daughter of Pardon Taber and Rachel White of Ohio County Kentucky who were both deceased at the time of this marriage. Probably William S. Buchanan was still living in Meade County Kentucky at this time, and that is why the marriage took place in Meade County. However Simeon Buchanan had probably already settled in the area of Grayson County near Falls of Rough in Grayson County. Falls of Rough is very close to the section of Ohio County Kentucky where the Taber family lived, and probably William S. Buchanan met Elenor Taber because his father was living in that area. Also many kinfolk of the Taber family lived in Hardin and Breckenridge Counties. He probably continued to live in Meade County in 1836 and 1837 as he appears on the 1837 tax roll of Meade County. His oldest daughter by wife Elenor Taber, Mary Ellen Buchanan, born Nov. 9, 1836, was probably born in Meade County.
In 1838 William S. Buchanan was living in Grayson County Kentucky as he appears on the
tax list of that county living next door to his father Simeon and brother David. His second daughter by Elenor Taber, Amelia Ann, was born there April 15, 1838. She was named for her grand- mother, Amelia Spaulding, first wife of Simeon Buchanan.
In 1839 or 1840 William S. Buchanan and his brother David moved to Pope County Arkansas
and lived 2 or 3 years. Just what impelled them to move to this central section of Arkansas is not known. They are listed on the 1840 Census. John L. Buchanan, son of William S. Buchanan and Elenor Taber, was born Sept. 28, 1840 Pope County Arkansas.
By 1842 William S. Buchanan had settled in Missouri close to the county line of Camden and Hickory County on the Little Niangua River. The rest of his children were all born in this area. According to family tradition he was joined there by his brother David and sister Martha who married James Hayden. David Buchanan, if he lived in this area, lived only a short time there as all of his children show as born in Kentucky and in 1850 he was on the Hardin County Kentucky census. There is a James H. Hayden listed in the early land entries of Camden County Missouri.
William S. Buchanan died in 1848 while living in this Camden/Hickory County area on the Little Niangua River. It is not known where he is buried. Elenor Buchanan, widow of William S., appears on the 1850 census of Hickory County and the 1860 census of Camden County Missouri. She may not have moved at all. The family must have lived very close to the county lines. Two of the children married into the Stark family which lived close to the Camden County line in Hickory County Missouri. The marriage of John Todd Stark and Amelia Ann Buchanan took place in Camden County Missouri in 1857 indicating that Amelia Ann did live in Camden County at the time of her marriage. Perhaps the census enumerator in 1850 confused the location of the home of this family.
Tragedy came to the Buchanan family in the early 1860's. Eliza Ammanda Buchanan
died Dec. 13, 1861, and a little over a month later her brother John L. Buchanan died Jan. 18, 1862. Eliza Ammanda was age 17 at her death and John L. was age 21. This tragedy may have been connected in some manner with events of the Civil War in Missouri.
Two of the daughters of William S. Buchanan and Elenor Taber married in the 1850's. Mary Ellen Buchanan married William Lawrence Bannister April 1853 and Amelia Ann Buchanan married John Todd Stark Nov. 19, 1857. On the 1860 census Elenor had in her household her children John L., William A., Eliza Ammanda, James and Solomon. Solomon Buchanan was apparently a child born out of wedlock after the death of William S. Buchanan. Very little is known of what became of him. Relatives in Hickory County MO did know of his existence. Martha Jane, the youngest child of William S. and Elenor Buchanan, was living with her sister Amelia Ann and husband John Todd Stark in 1860.
The close of the Civil War brought much change to the Buchanan family as happened to so many other families. William Ambrose Buchanan decided to settle in Texas. May 29, 1866 he married Frances Stark, sister of John Todd Stark who had married Amelia Ann Buchanan. Sister and brother married sister and brother. By Feb. 1867 he was living in Cooke County Texas when his first child Elizabeth was born.
About this same time, John and Will Bannister, sons of Mary Ellen Buchanan and William Lawrence Bannister came to Texas. During or just after the Civil War, William Lawrence Bannister, husband of Mary Ellen Buchanan, left his wife and family and moved to Texas with another woman. He had a large family by this second wife and lived in the neighborhood of Parker County Texas. John and Will Bannister, the only children of Mary Ellen Buchanan and William Lawrence Bannister, in 1866 at the age of 16 and 15 set out for Texas to find their father.
Elenor Buchanan and her son James or "Jim" Buchanan either accompanied William Ambrose Buchanan and his wife Frances Stark to Texas or followed them shortly thereafter. By 1871 William Ambrose Buchanan had moved from Cooke County Texas to Lampasas County and lived in a section of that county that is now Mills County southeast of what is now Goldthwaite, Texas. There was no town in that area in 1871. In Oct. 1874 Elenor Buchanan died and is buried in the Mohler Cemetery, a small cemetery located southeast of Goldthwaite, Texas in present Mills County. Her tombstone is still readable. According to family tradition, James Buchanan, son of William S. and Elenor Buchanan, was killed in a gunfight. He probably died in the early 1870's and was buried in the Mohler Cemetery beside his mother. Next to the grave of Elenor Buchanan in the Mohler Cemetery is a grave marked by a smafl unmarked stone which is probably the grave of James/Jim Buchanan. As far as is known, he never married.
By September of 1874 William Ambrose Buchanan had moved a little further south to Burnet County Texas. William Lafayette Stark, a half-brother of Frances Stark, wife of William A. Buchanan, was living in Burnet County at that time. Lampasas, Burnet and San Saba Counties are all adjoining counties. By 1877 William A. Buchanan was living in San Saba County which joins Burnet County on the northwest.
In 1875John Todd Stark and his wife Amelia Ann Buchanan had moved to the Pecan Bayou in what is now Mills County Texas. He and Amelia Ann had left Hickory County Missouri in 1868 and moved to Madison County Arkansas where they lived in the community where John Todd Stark's Todd relatives lived. They remained in Arkansas from 1868 until 1875 when they came to Texas. They lived the rest of their life in Mills County Texas and are both buried in the Rock Springs Cemetery in the Rock Springs community where they lived for many years.
Th 1880 William A. Buchanan was a resident of McCulloch County Texas which joins San Saba County on the west. By 1882 he had moved to the part of Edwards County that is present Real County Texas. Here he settled permanently in this rugged hill county north and west of San Antonio, Texas. William A. and Frances Buchanan are both buried in the Leakey Cemetery, Leakey, Texas.
John and Will Bannister, the two sons of Mary Ellen Buchanan, who set out for Texas to find their father, did not find their father when they first arrived in Texas. They remained in Texas and took jobs as cowhands and became Texas Rangers in the hectic years following the Civil War. Both became noted as Rangers. John Bannister later settled in Coleman County Texas where he worked for years as a lawman for cattle interests and in 1914 was elected sheriff of Coleman County. He died while still in office in 1918. Capt. J. B. Gillette in his book "The Texas Rangers" says of John R. Bannister and his brother Will that they at the ages of 23 and 21 were celebrated frontiersmen, old cowboys, splended shots and well acquainted with every part of this section of Texas. John R. Bannister spent 42 years as a peace officer. His daughter has written his biography in a book called "Bannister Was Here"
The only child of William S. Buchanan and Elenor Taber to remain in Missouri was
Martha Jane Eleanor Buchanan who married James Knox Polk Driskill Nov. 26, 1865 in
Benton County Missouri. She lived all her life in the northeast section of Hickory
County, and she and her husband are buried in the Fairview Cemetery near Jordan in
Hickory County. Descendants still live in this area.
