Isaac Roberts was born in Russell Co. VA in about 1786 and was the eleventh of Cornelius Roberts’ twelve children. Isaac was about two years old when his father was killed by Indians. His mother, Mary, remarried John Frost and they moved to Anderson Co. TN and later to Cumberland Co. KY where he married Anna Enyart in about 1805. They had 3 children there before Anna Enyart died sometime between 1812 and 1819, and soon after thier youngest son, Cornelius W. Roberts, at the age of 7 went to live with William Crow, Anna Enyart’s brother-in-law, as an apprentice. Isaac remarried Rhoda(last name unknown) in about 1818-1820. They moved to Alabama where they had 5 children, and then sometime between 1830-1834 they moved moved to Shelby Co. TX where thier last child was born. In about 1837 the family moved to Gonzales Co. TX(now Caldwell Co.) where Isaac served in the Texas Republic cavalry with his nephew Jeremiah and recieved a headright of land from the new government. He died there in 1839.

Isaac Roberts from Virginia to Texas

The trail of Isaac Roberts from Virginia to Texas is difficult to follow. He does not appear on any of the Russell County Virginia tax lists so he must have gone with his mother Mary and her second husband Rev. John Frost to Tennessee. Rev. John Frost and wife Mary were in Washington County Virginia until at least May of 1795 when he sold property patented to him in 1785. Rev. John Frost was mentioned as a Messenger of the Chesnut Ridge Baptist Church, located in present Anderson County Tennessee, in 1797. Based upon the known records of Isaac Roberts he was probably the next to youngest child of Cornelius Roberts, born circa 1786. Thus when Rev. John Frost and wife Mary went to Tennessee Isaac was about 11 years old.

Anderson County Tennessee 1805 petition…Isaac Roberts.
The above record may or may not refer to Isaac3 Roberts.

In December of 1805 an Isaac Roberts appears in the records of Cumberland County Kentucky. This Isaac Roberts was probably the son of Cornelius Roberts. He appears in 4 records of Cumberland County KY:3 surveys and 1 deed. Two of the surveys connect him with John Enyart. One John Enyart also appears in Russell County VA records. In one survey Isaac Roberts was chain carrier for land entered by RoddenThompson and delivered to Archibald Roberts. Archibald Roberts appears in Cumberland County KY surveys from 1803 through 1807. Rev. John Frost and wife Mary were also in Cumberland County. John Frost appears on the 1810 census. There is an Anderson County TN deed in 1812 in which John Frost of Cumberland County KY sells land to Samuel Frost of Anderson County. It would appear that sometime after 1802 Rev. John Frost and wife Mary, Isaac Roberts and Archibald Roberts left Tennessee and moved to Cumberland County KY where Jesse Roberts was already living.

One Isaac Roberts and wife left the congregation of Clear Fork Baptist Church in Cumberland County KY in Oct. 1808. There is no record of when they joined. It is doubtful that this Isaac is the same person as Isaac3 Roberts. Jesse Roberts with wife Lucy and William Roberts with wife Susannah were also members of Clear Fork church. They are of another Roberts line which may be more distantly related to the family of Cornelius.

If the Isaac Roberts of the 1810 Cumberland County KY census is Isaac3, then he probably married about 1804 or 1805 and had 2 sons and a daughter born by 1810. Census records place this Isaac Roberts living near various members of the family of John Enyart.

Anna Enyart was the daughter of John and Mary Enyart.

Rhoda ________ , second wife of Isaac Roberts, was born circa 1800 KY and died after 1850 possibly Shelby County TX.

Abraham Enyert 100 acres Cumberland County on C. Creek entered in name of A. Roberts.

William Crow was the Guardian of Cornelius W. Roberts. He was born March 5, 1793 Botetourt County VA. He was a Baptist Minister. They were on the 1820 Census of Madison County IL living next to Abner Enyart. When they moved to Illinois, they took Cornelius W. Roberts with them.

Abner Enyart was in Madison County IL 1818-1820. He moved to Missouri in 1834. He died in Buchanan County MO in 1843.

Strother Ball and wife Rebecca Stephens were in 1820 Census Madison County IL next to Abner Enyart and William Crow. They were in MO in 1850 and to Texas 1850-1860.

This is to certify that I am personally acquianted with John E. Roberts now of the Co. of Harrison State of MO, and Cornelius W. Be it remembered that on this 25th day of Dec AD 1860 before me, Just. of the Buchanon Court of Common Please of Buchanan Co. personally appeared Rebecca Bedford, who is personally known to be me to be the person whose name is subscribed to the foregoing affidavit and acknowledges the same to be true. s/ Joseph T. White(?) judge

This record proves that both Cornelius W. and John E. Roberts were sons of Isaac Roberts and Anna Enyart. This affidavit was signed in 1860 by Rebecca Enyart who had married Thomas Bedford. Cornelius W. Roberts went with William Crow and wife Marian Enyart to Illinois. After the death of Marian Enyart Crow in 1823, apparently Elijah Holder became his guardian as the following record shows.

Morgan Co, Illinois

Elijah Holder, Guaridian of Cornelius Roberts, do hereby give my consent for the said Cornelius Roberts to be joined in Marriage with Polly Davis.
Given under my hand this 20th day of October 1828, Elijah Holder.

Alabama Records

Isaac Roberts disappears from the records of Cumberland County KY after 1810 except for the record in 1819 in which his son Cornelius is apprenticed to William Crow. It is probable that the first wife of Isaac Roberts died not long after 1812. The children of his first marriage may have been raised by relatives of their mother in Cumberland County. For this reason, the young son of Isaac Roberts may have been placed as an apprentice to his uncle William Crow.

Probably in this same time period, 1810-1820 Isaac Roberts married a second time. He had left Cumberland County by 1820 as he does not appear on the census there. He probably joined his brothers who had moved south to Franklin County Tennessee and then to Madison County Alabama. There is evidence that Rev. John Frost and wife Mary also left Cumberland County and moved south and died in Franklin County Tennessee.

Russell County VA Deed Bk 8, p 234,written Oct. 5, 1829, lists all the heirs of Cornelius Roberts. One of those heirs was Isaac Roberts who was listed as living in the state of Alabama. Daniel Roberts, Nathan Roberts, Amelia Roberts and husband Edward Frost and Mourning Roberts and husband Jacob Talley all moved from Tennessee to Alabama. Most of them lived in Madison County for a short time. Later Jacob and Mourning Talley settled in Jackson County Alabama, Edward and Amelia Frost settled in Morgan County Alabama, Nathan Roberts lived in Tuscaloosa County Alabama and Daniel Roberts moved to Pickens County Alabama.

This land grant shows that Isaac Roberts came to Texas in 1834 and that he was still living in Feb. of 1838. Isaac had formerly lived in Tuscaloosa County AL, and Nathan Roberts also lived in Tuscaloosa County AL. Jeremiah Roberts, oldest son of Nathan Roberts, was already in Texas in 1830. Isaac Roberts probably came to Texas because Jeremiah Roberts was already there.

This census is undated. The Mexican government required the census, and the census was slowly taken over the period from 1829 to 1836. Since Isaac Roberts came to Texas in 1834, the census could not have been earlier than that date. Based upon other records, the census was probably taken in 1836. If the census was taken in 1836, Isaac, according to this census, was born in 1796 which is about an error of 10 years in his age. Perhaps they did not want to indicate to the Mexican authorities that he was 50 years old.

A comparison of the 1830 Tuscaloosa County Alabama census, the Teneha District Texas census and the 1850 Shelby County Texas census compares well.

1830 Tuscaloosa Co. AL Census

Son born 1825-1830 Thomas born circa 1827
Anna born circa 1830
Crecia born circa 1832 Lucy born circa 1833

The only place the two census records do not match is regarding the age of Nancy. The 1830 census has a daughter born 1815-20, and the Teneah District census says Nancy was born 1823. Based upon these children and their ages Isaac Roberts married the second time about 1818-1820. None of these children have been found in any records so nothing further is known of them or where they lived.

Isaac Roberts had title to 1 league and 1 labor of land in Gonzales in 1839 but the grant was not confirmed before his death. He sold the labor of land to Abraham Roberts for $300. This transaction probably took place in 1838. Abraham Roberts came to Texas no earlier than the latter part of 1837, probably in 1838. In order to settle the estate of Isaac Roberts, it was necessary to get clear title to the land. The grants were formally filed Dec. 1, 1845, No. 339, Vol. 3 and Dec. 31, 1845, No 338, Vol 3.
Abraham Roberts sold the labor to Ira Bisbee.

These papers would, indicate Isaac Roberts was still living in the fall of 1838. He must have died in 1839 probably in the fall as Abraham Roberts applied as administrator in Feb. 1840. Isaac Roberts does not appear on the regular 1840 tax list.

Jeremiah Roberts obtained this land through the Title Bond Sept. 5, 1837. This record shows that Jeremiah Roberts had the league of land as early as 1837. (See Gonzales Co Deed Bk pg. 162) Isaac Roberts probably was still in the Teneha District (Present Shelby Co) in 1836. After the Texas Revolution was over, he may have moved onto his land in Gonzales County. When Abraham Roberts applied to be the administrator in Feb. 1840 he said Isaac Roberts was a citizen of Gonzales County. Isaac Roberts probably lived in Gonzales County about two years. After his death his widow returned to Shelby County. Perhaps she had relatives there.
