He was born May 15, 1784 and died April 6, 1842, age 57 years, 10 months, 21 days.

The Stevenson Story” by Eliza B. Woodall

Two Tally brothers settled in Crow Creek Valley in the early days of Alabama statehood. They were Matthew (1782-1821) and Jacob (1784-1842) sons of John Tally who died in Franklin County Tennessee about 1813, John Tally had been in Sullivan County Tennessee as early as 1784; he came to Franklin County around 1807. Matthew and Jacob may have stayed in East Tennessee awhile before coming on to Franklin County where they were living in 1812 when the tax list for that year ws prepared.

Capt. Jacob Tally, who acquired his title from his service in the First Regiment of the Alabama Militia, being commissioned Sept. 20, 1826, settled in Dry Cove on land he purchased from Samuel Summers. He built a two-story log house on a slight rise of land near the foot of the mountain and also other dependencies. Then he constructed a cedar log “pipeline” from a fine spring on the mountain back of Tally Churchhouse to the foot of the mountain near his home. Parts of that pipeline were in use a hundred years later. Jacob continued to buy land adjoining his original purchase until he needed some slaves to operate his holdings.

Jacob and Mourning (Roberts) Tally are buried in Tally Cemetery in Dry Cove.

Capt., Jacob Tally

In memory of Capt. Jacob Tally who died suddenly it was thought of apoplexy the 6th of April 1842, age 57 years, 10 months and 21 days. By his industry and economy he procured a patrimony for his descendants sufficient for all necessary purposes. He was kind and courteous in all the relations of social life. As a patriot he was ever anxious for the prosperity of this country and zealously devoted to the principles contained in the democratic creed of Jefferson. As a Christian he had received the divine ordinance of baptism having previously obtained the evidence of faith that he had passed from death unto life though he was not exempted from the frailty that is given to human nature.
