Will of Joseph Baker----Dated Sept. 20, 1720
Many bequests including:
Unto Thomas Dix, the widow Olive and the widow Aires half the sums of tobacco that each standeth justly indebted to me.
Apparently in his Will Joseph Baker erased one half the debt that Thomas Dix owed him.
Beginning with this record Thomas Dix and his descendants began to use the spelling Dix instead of Dicks. However for many years both spellings were used.

It is ordered that John Singleton do pay unto Matthew Dicks 150 pounds tobacco for attending this Court 6 days as an evidence for him against Forest Upshaw and Ann his wife.
It is ordered John Singleton pay unto John Allen, Philip Gatewood, Richard Minor, John Latane, Samuel Shaw, Thomas Gatewood, Jeremiah Moody, Frances Billups.
Many of these people were associated with the Dicks family in Essex County. Matthew Dicks has not been identified as a son of either William Dicks or James Dicks, brothers of Thomas Dicks. It seems most likely that he was a son of Thomas Dicks. Nothing further is known of this Matthew Dicks.
