Notes: James Dicks was a widower in 1744 when he sold land to Thomas Dunn as no wife relinquished her dower. Jane Baldwin was a widow by June of 1747. James Dicks was married to Jane by May of 1750. Jane was still a widow in Aug. of 1748 as she was involved in the suit with Caleb Baker as Jane Baldwin at that time. It would seem that between August of 1748 and May of 1750 that James Dicks married Jane.
Notes: James Dicks bought 610 acres in Amelia County from Thomas Tabb in 1740. This land was located on West Creek which flows southwest from Amelia County into Nottoway County and then flows parallel to the Nottoway-Amelia County line in Nottoway County. Since Nottoway County was formed in 1788-89 from Amelia County, the land of James Dicks may have been in present day Nottoway County. Since the creek is close to the Amelia-Nottoway line he lived in either southern Amelia County or northern Nottoway County.
In 1744 James Dicks sold 200 acres of his farm to Thomas Dunn of Essex County.
In 1748 James Dicks sold 210 acres of his farm to John Baldwin.
John Baldwin was related in some way to Francis Baldwin who was the first husband of James Dicks' second wife Jane and to David Baldwin who married Frances, daughter of James Dicks.
In 1750 James Dicks and his wife Jane were of Lunenburg County when they sold the last 200 acres of the farm that James Dicks bought from Thomas Tabb in 1740. James Dicks moved to Lunenburg County between May of 1749 when he made a gift deed to his daughter Frances of a negro slave Jenny and May of 1750 when he sold the last of his Amelia County land.

For 1764
Under David Garland
James Dicks
James Dicks Jr.----3 tithes
400 acres of land
Notes: Tithe lists give the name of the taxpayer and to whom the tithes were chargeable. Tithes were the taxpayer himself, the white male members of his family over 16, and the slaves male and female over 16.
The above record is the last record found for James Dicks Sr. The next lists which are in 1772 show James Dicks with 2 tithes, indicating that James Dicks died. No tithe records are available for the period between 1764 and 1772 to show more precisely when James Dicks Sr. died.
Even though James Dicks Sr. had deeded his land to his son in 1761, he appears to have still been considered the tithable taxpayer in 1764. The processioning records in 1763 probably also refer to him although they might have referred to James Dicks Jr.
The farm of James2 Dicks was located in the area of Flat Rock and Stoney Creeks. Flat Rock and Stoney Creeks parallel the Brunswick Co line. They are the first two major creeks inside the Lunenburg County line from Brunswick County. They both flow south into the Meherrin River. The Dicks family lived in this little corner of Lunenburg County which borders Brunswick and Mecklenburg Counties. This is the southeast corner of the county. Today on the Lunenburg County map is a place designated as Dix Bridge on the Meherrin River very close to the Brunswick County line. Thus from 1755 until the late l800's the Dicks family lived in this area.

Notes: The land of James2 Dicks was described in his Land Grant as being on a branch of Great Creek. There was a Great Creek in Brunswick County which does not appear to have flowed into Lunenburg County. All records show the land of James Dicks in the area of Flat Rock and Stoney creek. One of them may have had that name in 1755. Years later, there was a small branch in Lunenburg County called Dickes Branch. This may have been the land where the grant was.

Notes Regarding Birth Dates of James Dicks Sr., James Dicks Jr. and first wife Judith Crow.
At the time the husband of Judith Crow Dickenson, John Dickenson, wrote his will in 1725 he was the father of 5 children. Thus Judith, his wife was married about 12 years previously or about 1713. If she married at about the age of 20, she was born about 1693.
James2 Dicks Sr. was probably born about 1687. When his father John made his will in 1697/98, all 4 of his sons were under 21 years of age. Thus they were all born after 1676. They appear to have been born between 1685 and 1695 based upon records of the 4 sons. James Dicks could have been a few years younger than a birth of 1687. He was probably not younger than his wife Judith who ws born about 1693.
James2 Dicks Sr. and Judith Crow married about 1725.
Jame3 Dicks Jr. was 16-21 years of age on the tithe list in 1750. Thus he was born between 1729 and 1734.
Francis3, the daughter of James Dicks Sr., was married to David Baldwin in 1749. Thus her birth date was
1731 or earlier. She was probably a little older than James Dicks Jr.
James Dicks Sr. could have had other daughters not identified.
