Sowerby is a manor in the Hundred of Amournderness in Lancaster, England.
The Sowerbys were holding part of this manor 1284 but seem to have been later dispossed by the Butlers.
The arms of the Sowerbys wee Barry of six, sa, and gu on a chevron between 3 lions rampant.
There was once a family of Sowerbys long seated at Dalston Hall in Cumberland.
Three Sowerby brothers lived in Surry County during the middle 17th Century.

Note: This is the first mention of James Sowerby in the Surry County records.
A record in Surry County Bk 2, P 127 gives his birth as 1611.
He died in 1678 or 1679 leaving a wife Ann and daughter Margaret.

John Talbot aged 22 says returning home from Lt. Co. Jordans land day before New Year last 12 months, did call in at Francis Sorsbys house ask for cider-----his fellow servant Cotton Robinson.
Francis Sorsby followed deponent over bridge and told deponent that his brother Thomas did tell him that Richard Tyas informed him at John Rawlings his mill, that his Master was going to arrest him.
